Well, the (insert expletive here) Detroit Red Wings just beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-4 in the 2009 NHL Winter Classic. While there was definitely more scoring than last year's version in Buffalo, I was honestly bored watching it. I guess there's a lot to be said for seeing your team in the event. After the first period, which I did enjoy watching, I found myself fast forwarding my TiVo since I was on a delay. And what did I ultimately end up doing instead of watching most of the second and third periods? I watched parts of last year's Winter Classic.
Seeing the snow globe that was Ralph Wilson Stadium was so much cooler in my mind, but again, I'm sure I've got a natural bias. Maybe it was also just the newness of the idea. Regardless, I hope the event continues each year in a new place since it will be a lot of fun for those involved to experience, even if it's just on TV like I did (I'm still wondering if I would have enjoyed the game more in person). But for me, I don't see any of the future Winter Classics topping the Sabres and Pens in 2008.
Happy New Year, everyone!
